“Power and the Sacred: Transformations. Legitimisation of Values in the Secular Age”. Intensive course & public lecture

The Pontifical John Paul II institute is pleased to announce the opening of the registration for the Visiting Professors Course 2023 on “Power and the Sacred: Transformations. Legitimation of values in the secular age”.

Taught by renowned philosopher and sociologist prof. Hans Joas and a well-known liturgist prof. Marco Gallo, the course is coordinated by prof. Pierangelo Sequeri, director of the Gaudium et Spes Chair, and will take place at the Jp2 Institute in Rome from 13 to 17 February, 2023, from 8:30 till 12:45.

Prof. Hans Joas will offer reflections on Transcendence and Attachment to Values: the Power of the Sacred discussing topics such as Religious Experience and the Sacred, Sacredness and Political Power, The Sacredness of the Person: on the Emergence of Human Rights, Transcendence and Moral Universalism, and The Church and Moral Universalism. In his part of the course, prof. Marco Gallo will address the questions of consecration, sacrifice, spiritual worship and sacra potestas.

Prof. Joas will teach in English. Simultaneous translation into Italian will be provided.

The Course is free of charge for the students of Pontifical Universities. To register, follow the procedures indicated in the CRUIPRO mobility agreement.

On February 16, at 17:00, the Visiting Professors will offer a Public Lecture on the topic “The Power of the Sacred in the Secular Age. Faith and Values”. Admission is free and the simultaneous English-Italian translation is provided.
