ACADEMIC NORMS
1 – Admission to the Licentiate
Those who possess a Bachelor degree from an ecclesiastical Faculty or an Institute approved by the Holy see, or aUniversity degree, of a duration of a least three years, can enrol in the Institute at the SMF Licentiate as ordinary students.
2 – Organisation of Studies
The Licentiate, which lasts two years (four semesters) for a total of 120 ECTS, aims to train the student in a thorough knowledge of the subject and to educate him/her in scientific work. In order to be enrolled in the second year, the student must demonstrate that he/she has sufficient knowledge, in addition to his/her mother tongue, of the Latin language and of two of the following languages: French, English, Italian, Spanish and German.
The organisation of the Licentiate studies is divided into fundamental disciplines, complementary subjects and seminars.
Complementary courses and seminars can be chosen by the student from among the subjects of the anthropological-cultural specialization.
It is the task of the Council of Central See to establish each year an adequate number of seminars and optional courses on more specific and urgent matters.
Students must attend seminars and courses, passing exams, for a total of 120 ECTS credits distributed as follows:
- 71 ECTS credits for mandatory courses and fundamental courses in the theological-pastoral specialization.
- 21 ECTS credits for optional courses and seminars of the student’s choice starting from the second semester.
- 10 ECTS credits for the overall final exam
- 16 ECTS credits for written dissertation.
- 2 ECTS credits for two foreign languages.
3 – Achievement of the Degree
To obtain the Licentiate degree, the student must have written a dissertation under the guidance of a professor. By the established date from year to year, he will deliver to the professor a printed copy and to the General Secretariat a printed copy and an electronic copy in PDF format. After passing the exams of the courses and seminars, as well as the final overall exam, and having obtained a positive evaluation of the written work, the student acquires the Licentiate in Sciences of Marriage and the Family, which is a canonical degree.
The final grade (expressed in thirtieths) is calculated on the basis of the following coefficients:
- Mandatory and fundamental course average: 40% (82 ECTS)
- Average of optional courses and seminars: 10% (12 ECTS)
- Written dissertation: 40% (16 ECTS)
- Total final examination: 10% (10 ECTS)
