Academic program for 2016-2017

General Norms

1. Those who possess a University degree, of a duration of a least three years, are eligible to be admitted to the Master's program.

2. Admission to the program is conditional upon a knowledge of the Italian language. Italian courses are proposed at the Pontifical Lateran University during the month of September, and during the whole academic year.

3. Admission to the second year is conditional upon a knowledge of at least two of the following languages (excluded one's native language):  Italian, English, French, German, Spanish. The two languages (2 ECTS each) can not belong to the same family.  This knowledge is to be demonstrated either by documentation or by passing a test at the Institute. This test consists of the reading and immediate translation of a brief test.

4. At the beginning of the first year, the Director of Studies will assign to every student a Tutor, who has the role of accompanying the student during the first few months of the program, introducing him to the academic experience and to the academic perspective of the Institute. In particular, the Tutor will follow his student in the drafting of three synthetic texts of about 5-6 pages each which presents a work or articles, upon which they have both agreed. The Tutor will then communicate this presentation to the Secretariat by means of the appropriate form. Tutoring corresponds to 8 ECTS.

5. At the end of the first year, the student will choose a professor in his or her field of specialization. He or she will establish with this professor a reading and study schedule and be guided by this professor in the elaboration of the papers and the final dissertation.

      a) There should be three of these papers, which will be written during the second year of the program. They should be turned in at least one month before the final dissertation. The Tutor will communicate to the Secretariat his evaluation of the individual papers. Every paper, which must be at least 10 pages typed, is equal to 3 ECTS.

        - Criteria for the papers:

       Every paper must demonstrate a deepened knowledge of an important theme, whose direction will have been chosen by the student.

       The three to five texts studied by the paper must be chosen according to an interdisciplinary criterion, articles of a scientific character being preferred. It is possible to chose only one title if these texts are a scientific monograph of at least 200 pages.

       Every paper must present a compendium of texts examined by the student, demonstrating his capacity to individuate the core of a problem and possible points for further study.

      b) The outline of the dissertation, once it has been approved by the professor, must be turned into the Secretariat by the end of the second semester of the first year. The outline of this dissertation, once it has been approved by the professor, must be turned in to the Secretariat. This dissertation, which must not be any longer than 50 pages, will be presented and discussed during the final exam. Other than the discussion of this paper, the final exam will consist in an oral interdisciplinary test on two themes, chosen from among a list, one by the candidate and one by the professor. Contact with the professor can be managed by long distance. Administrative contacts with the Secretariat can also be long-distance, except for the general norms and the particular dispositions given by the Secretary.

The final grade, expressed in thirtieths, will be calculated using the following formula:

* The average of courses and seminars: 70%

* The dissertation: 20%

* The interdisciplinary oral test: 10%

When there are decimals, grades inferior to 0.5 are rounded down; grades equal to or superior to 0.5 are rounded up.
